John white colonist biography of alberta

John White (colonist and artist)

John White, a man of many talents, was a colonial governor, artist, explorer, and cartographer. He embarked on an expedition to colonize Roanoke Island in , where he served as an artist and mapmaker. During his stay there, he made several watercolor sketches of the surrounding landscape and the Algonkin people. These sketches were unique in that they provided insight into the Native American society of the Eastern seaboard. The original watercolors are now preserved in the print room of the British Museum, a testament to their importance.

In , White was appointed governor of the second attempt to establish a permanent settlement on Roanoke Island. The colony, known as the "Lost Colony," was the earliest effort to establish an English colony in the New World. White's granddaughter, Virginia Dare, was the first English child born in North America. In , White returned to England for supplies but was delayed by various reasons, including the Spanish Armada. Finally, in August , he returned to Roanoke Island, only to find that the colony had vanished, leaving behind no trace of its inhabitants.

This is a cross-posting from a piece I recently wrote for the Public Domain Review. For this version of the post, I&#;ve supplemented the original with quite a few more images which are sourced from the British Museum and are reproduced here under its fair use agreement. As a side note, I&#;ve been remiss in updating Res Obscura lately because I&#;ve been in the thick of my dissertation research, and have also been traveling. But I&#;m working on a couple new posts at the moment so I expect to start updating more regularly again.  &#; BB

“As lucklesse to many, as sinister to myselfe.” Such was the Elizabethan colonist John White’s gloomy assessment of his tenure as the first governor of Britain’s fledgling colony on Roanoke Island, Virginia. As White lived out his final days on an Irish plantation in , he struggled to come to terms with his ambivalent legacy in the “Newe found Worlde.”

Just eight years earlier, White had set out for North America as part of an expedition lead by a fiery-tempered courtier named Sir Richard Grenville. This voyage was not without its challenges – White recalled laconically that in a battle with Spanish mariners he was “wounded twise in

WHITE, JOHN, English artist and the first to draw Eskimos in Canada; b. c. –50; fl.  in County Cork, Ireland.

White was perhaps of Cornish stock, though his family and early career have not been traced with any certainty. But he is most likely to be identified with the John White who was a member of the Painter-Stainers’ Company of London in He was intimately connected with Sir Walter Raleigh’s colonizing expeditions in North Carolina and Virginia between and , first as artist, later (–90) as governor of the new colony. The results of his artistic activities in Raleigh’s Virginia, which have survived, are confined to a set of skilful and convincing water-colour drawings, in the British Museum, of Indians and the fauna and flora of this coastal area.

Yet these almost certainly were not his first records of the New World. Though his name does not appear in the documents there is strong presumptive evidence that he sailed with Frobisher to South Baffin Island on his second voyage in This is supplied by a pen and water-colour drawing of a fight between Eskimos and Englishmen contained in an album of early 17th-century copies of White’s drawings, acquired b
