It is mainly the light that stands out in this idyllic landscape. Everything is bathed in the warm, golden light of a low sun. Some travellers are crossing a mountain path and stop to relieve themselves. In between the trees, we can see the calm water of a lake.
When he was twenty, Jan Both went south and lived a few years in Italy, where he took inspiration for this type of sun-drenched mountain landscape. Upon returning to his hometown of Utrecht, he painted dozens of them.

Jan Both werd tussen en geboren in Utrecht. Hij was de jongere broer van Andries Both. Zij waren zonen van glasschilder Dirk Both. Jan Both reisde na zijn opleiding bij Abraham Bloemaert samen met zijn broer Andries naar Italië.Bentvueghels
Zij zochten elkaar daar op en daardoor ontstond een soort broederschap. Deze groep werd de Bentvueghels genoemd. De italianisanten raakten in Italië onder de indruk van de lichtval en het Italiaanse landschap. In de meeste gevallen bleven zij ook na de terugkeer in dezelfde stijl doorwerken. Dat is ook het geval bij Jan Both.Italië
