You see this picture? This is one of the early covers of Sunil Gavaskars one of Indias finest Test batsmen autobiography, Sunny Days. This cover is special to me. Very special.
Let me tell you why.
I began actively watching cricket at the age of But long before I had actually begun doting on the game, I had developed the habit of reading. So, I remember we had a chapter in our 5th standard English course book titled, First Step. Narrated in first person, it presented a brief account of Sunil Gavaskars growth in cricket and his childhood days of playing the sport. Two particular anecdotes from that chapter really fascinated me. One was on how Gavaskar was almost exchanged with the baby of a fisherwoman accidentally the day he was born and the other was on how he broke his mothers nose once while playing cricket with her inside their house.
I remember really loving this particular passage:

Childhood And Early Life
Sunil Gavaskar was born on July 10, , in Mumbai, India. His parents Manohar and Meenal raised him in a middle-class family.
Cricket was a part of his household. His father played well, and his uncle on his mother's side of the family was a former wicketkeeper for the Indian Test.
Education
While in secondary school, Sunil Gavaskar was named India's Best Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year in Sunil Gavaskar attended St. Xavier College, which was well-known for its cricket team. His first-class debut was with the Vazir Sultan Colts XI during the season.
Career
Sunil Gavaskar's success in college led to his selection on the Indian team. His test debut was against the West Indies in March In that first year that Gavaskar played international cricket, Sunil Gavaskar scored runs in his debut test series on the West Indies tour.

The shy and modest year-old Bombay university cricketer won the hearts of the West Indians and his own countrymen, not only by his prodigious feats with the bat, but his innate sense of sportsmanship and all that it implies. Sunil Gavaskar (July 10, at Bombay, Maharashtra), nicknamed Sunny, was a cricket player during the s and s for Bombay and India. He is considered one of the greatest opening batsmen in the sport's history.
He made a spectacular test debut in scoring runs in his first test series against the West Indies helping India win for the first time in the Caribbean. From then until his retirement in he was a mainstay of the Indian batting line-up. In Gavaskar broke one of the oldest and most prestigious records in the game: Donald Bradman's 29 test centuries. As of , Gavaskar still holds the record for the most number of test centuries (34) and is the only player to score centuries in each innings three times. Gavaskar was also the first batsman to reach 10, test runs and held the record for the most number of runs until it was broken by Allan Border.
