Alice's Adventures in Wonderland began as an impromptu story told by Charles Dodgson (), a mathematics lecturer at Oxford University, to the daughters of a colleague (Alice, Lorina and Edith Liddell) while on a boating trip. For Alice, Dodgson expanded his story into book form, published in ; Alice Through the Looking Glass followed in They remain a great popular success.
Dodgson provided his own illustrations to the books, but while the type was being set, he was persuaded to employ a more competent draughtsman. John Tenniel (), who already had received high praise for his illustrations to Thomas Moore's Lalla Rookh (), was chosen for the task. Dodgson provided such specific instructions for Tenniel that their working relationship became strained. The resulting illustrations, however, proved a success. They were engraved on wood by the Dalziel Brothers, who ran the most important wood-engraving workshop of the time.

Sir John Tenniel's th Birthday
“‘Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?’ [said Alice].
‘That depends a good deal on where you want to get to,’ said the Cat.”
—Lewis Carroll, “Alice’s Adventure in Wonderland”
Don’t be late for today’s very important date! That is, the th birthday of British illustrator and artist Sir John Tenniel, celebrated by today’s Doodle. Tenniel is one of the most highly-regarded Victorian illustrators and painters, and is perhaps best remembered for bringing to life the characters of Lewis Carroll’s timeless “Alice in Wonderland” series.
Tenniel was born in London on this day in , and his talent was clear from a young age. Even the rulers of Wonderland are unable to secure control of their subjects, as seen in the appearance of the Cheshire-Cat's head in Chapter VIII "The Queen's Croquet Ground." Alice greets the cat with considerable relief ("Now I shall have somebody to talk to," she states) since she cannot adequately cope with the croquet-players and their endless arguments. The pandemonium of croquet must indeed be considerable for Alice to consider such an unwieldy personage as the Cheshire-Cat a friend:
"Who are you talking to?" said the King, coming up to Alice, and looking at the Cat's head with great curiosity.
"It's a friend of mine — a Cheshire-Cat," said Alice: "allow me to introduce it."
"I don't like the look of it at all," said the King: "however, it may kiss my hand, if it likes."
"I'd rather not," the Cat remarked.
"Don't be impertinent," said the King, "and don't look at me like that!" He got behind Alice as he spoke.
"A cat may look at a king," said Alice. "I've read that in some book, but I don't remember where."
"Well, it must be removed," said the King very decidedly; and he called to the Queen, who was passing at the moment, "My dear!
