Zhang Heng
Chinese Astronomer and Mathematician
Zhang Heng was a Chinese mathematician and scientist, born in the first century addition to being one of the emperor's astrologers, Heng made a number of interesting astronomical discoveries. However, his most important invention was the seismograph, used to detect earthquakes at a great distance.
Virtually nothing is known of Heng's early life or, indeed, of his nonprofessional life. What is known is that he was a multitalented scientist who became a minister in the Chinese government during the rule of Emperor An'ti. During this time, he was the chief astrologer as well as a respected mathematician and scientist.
Heng is known to have made a number of important contributions during his life. As an astronomer, he made a very good attempt to bring some order to the stars, describing the sky as being composed of " groups which are always brightly shining. Zhang Heng (), a native of Nanyang in central China's Henan Province, was a mathematician, astronomer and geographer of the Eastern Han Dynasty ().
Zhang's greatest contributions were in the field of astronomy. In he corrected the calendar to bring it into line with the seasons. In he invented the first seismoscope. His device was in the shape of a cylinder with eight dragon heads around the top, each with a ball in its mouth. Around the bottom were eight frogs, each directly under a dragon's head. When an earthquake occurred, a ball fell out of a dragon's mouth into a frog's mouth, making a noise.

Biography of Zhang Heng
Early Life and EducationZhang Heng, a Chinese astronomer, mathematician, geographer, inventor, artist, poet, literary scholar, and statesman, was born in 78 AD in the Nanyang district. He came from a noble but not very wealthy family. Zhang's father, a poor official, passed away when he was ten years old. He was raised by his grandmother and mother. At the age of 95, Zhang left his hometown and traveled to the ancient capitals of Chang'an and Luoyang.

Born in the town of Xi'e in Nanyang Commandery (located north of modern Nanyang City, Henan province), Zhang Heng came from a distinguished but not very affluent family. His grandfather, Zhang Kan, had been governor of a commandery, and one of the leaders who supported the restoration of the Han Dynasty by Emperor Guangwu (r. 25–57), following the death of the usurper Wang Mang and his short-lived Xin Dynasty (AD 9–23). At age ten, Zhang's father died, leaving him in the care of his mother and grandmother. An accomplished writer in his youth, Zhang left home in 95 to pursue his studies in the ancient capitals of Chang'an and Luoyang. While traveling to Luoyang, Zhang passed by a hot spring near Mount Li and dedicated one of his earliest fu poems to it, the Wenquan (溫泉). After studying for some years at Luoyang's (Taixue), he became well-versed in the classics, and befriended notable persons, such as the mathematician and calligrapher Cui Yuan (78–), the official and philosophical commentator Ma Rong (79–), and the philosopher Wang Fu (78–).
