After recording a career-best second at round two of the BMX World Cup in Copenhagen, Liam Phillips confirmed himself as a medal hope for the World Championships. We speak with Britain's top male contender days before he decamps to South Africa.
It was a smile I'd not seen since Copenhagen, but one which instantly put me at ease, because looking into the eyes of Liam Phillips days before his biggest race of the year, it was clear everything was in place.
Striding across the gym floor from the elevated running machine, Phillips offered his hand confidently and shook with a positive energy of expectation.

British Cycling Olympic BMX coach Grant White said:, external "It's phenomenal and he'd done the work.
"Once you've done the work you're prepared and you can sit there with a bit of confidence.
"He'd done the work to be successful and that's over a long period of time - that's not over the last few months, that's over the last couple of years. He knew he'd had a great preparation over the last 12 months and he delivered.
"It's a culmination of everything, we knew he was in the best shape of his life and came here and delivered. It's unbelievable, fantastic.
"This year he knows he's capable and he's got the package. He put it all together today."
Phillips won silver medals in the European Championships in and the world time trial last year as well as gold in Supercross at the World Cup in Manchester in April.

Phillips started out in BMX at the tender age of five, and he says that the sport is firmly in his blood.
He made his Olympic debut in , when he competed for Great Britain when 19 years old. He was knocked out in the quarter-finals.
Phillips since spent some time riding in the velodrome as part of the team sprint set-up alongside former BMXer Sir Chris Hoy. The experiment didn't work out, but what it did do is convince Phillips that his heart is with BMX.
A string of bone-breaking injuries had taken a psychological toll on the man from Somerset, but a dalliance with the boards was a case of 'absence makes the heart grow fonder'.

Liam Phillips will be Team GB’s main BMX medal hope when the Olympic Games kick off in Rio de Janeiro this summer – but what is his Olympic record?
