Robert Frost is a celebrated American poet. He had a great mastery of American colloquial speech and made realistic depictions of the early rural life. Robert Lee Frost (March 26, – January 29, ) was an American poet. His work was initially published in England before it was published in America. Known for his realistic depictions of rural life and his command of American colloquial speech, Frost frequently wrote about settings from rural life in New England in the early twentieth century, using them to examine complex social and philosophical themes.

Frost was honored frequently during his lifetime and is the only poet to receive four Pulitzer Prizes for Poetry. He became one of America's rare "public literary figures, almost an artistic institution." He was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal in for his poetic works. On July 22, , Frost was named poet laureate of Vermont.

Robert Frost (), a New England poet whose verse went far beyond the regional, is one of America’s most popular and well-regarded twentieth-century writers.  He was a four-time winner of the Pulitzer Prize, and many of his poems such as “Mending Wall” and “The Road Not Taken” have become touchstones of America’s poetic tradition.  He is noted for his faithful depiction of colloquial speech, his muscular, oftentimes ambiguous imagery, and his command of a pervasive and terrifying irony that belies any characterization of him as merely a genial purveyor of rural wisdom.

Frost was born on March 26, in San Francisco, California.  After the death of his journalist and teacher father, Frost and his family moved to Massachusetts, where the poet would spend the rest of his childhood.  Frost briefly attended Dartmouth College, but he quickly became disillusioned and took on a series of odd jobs throughout the s, working as a teacher, a factory worker, a mill worker, and a newspaper deliveryman.

The early years

Robert Lee Frost was born in San Francisco, California, on March 26, His father, William, came from Maine and New Hampshire ancestry and had graduated from Harvard in He left New England and went to Lewistown, Pennsylvania, to teach. He married another teacher, Isabelle Moodie, a Scotswoman, and they moved to San Francisco, where the elder Frost became an editor and politician. Robert, their first child, was named for the Southern hero General Robert E. Lee (&#x;).

When Frost&#x;s father died in , his will requested that he be buried in New England. His wife and two children, Robert and Jeanie, went east for the funeral. Lacking funds to return to California, they settled in Salem, Massachusetts, where his grandfather had offered them a home. Eventually Mrs. Frost found a job teaching at a school.
