Originally known for his collaborations and as a member of the trio Tananas, he also released solo albums as vocalist and bassist: "Ekhaya" (), “Na Ku Randza" (), "Herbs & Roots" () and the posthumously-released "Beyond" (). Recognised by his haunting vocals and lead bass style, Baloi is regarded a pioneer of African Jazz and as one of the most respected guitarists from Southern Africa.

    Gito Baloi (September 30, – April 4, ) was an African musician, born in Mozambique. Originally known for his collaborations and as a member of the trio Tananas, his haunting voice and bass guitar also shine through his solo albums "Ekhaya"(), Na Ku Randza"(), "Herbs & Roots"() and the posthumously released "Beyond"(). Gito collaborated with Jason Armstrong in and on two albums, Desert Voices, and was bass player in the band Somewhere Else together with Armstrong (keyboards), George Sunday (guitar) and Gaston Goliath (drums) during Baloi sang vocals in the song "Mountain Wind" on the album "Bush Telegraph" by Landscape Prayers, and was also credited on the album for production and mixing. In , Baloi recorded "Sweet-Thorn", a duo album with Landscape Prayers guitarist Nibs van der Spuy.

Gito Baloi has played and sung music for as long as he can remember.
 
Surrounded by the traditional music of his extended family - Nyanja as well as Shangaan - he spent his earliest years exploring sounds with the aid of discarded paraffin tins, reeds and anything he could lay his hands on. His first public performances, playing a borrowed bass guitar at 14 years of age, helped to support his family in a war-torn Mozambique. Gito was inspired by Mozambican musicians like Hortensia Langa, Fani Mfumo and Orchestra Marabenta, and he traveled with a band called “ Afro 78” from Maputo to Nampula, Ilha de Mozambique, Beira and Angoche all before he’d reached the age of 15 years.
 

THE NINETEEN EIGHTIES

Gito Baloi formed the group “PONGOLO”, which produced two albums and travelled through out South Africa, performing in Johannesburg, Pretoria and Cape Town.
