When Jerrod Blandino first met Jeremy Johnson at a San Francisco hair salon in , he was impressed. “From the very beginning, I could see that Jeremy has the most amazing instincts,” remembers Blandino. “I knew I’d want to ride on this kid’s coattails.”
Like Céline Dion and René Angélil, Too Faced co-founders Blandino and Johnson are the yin-yang power couple of beauty. Both originally from Southern California, Johnson was a business manager and Blandino, a rising star at the Estée Lauder counter in I. Magnin in Palos Verdes. Despite being the highest seller in his region, he bored easily. For excitement, he would roll up his sleeves and hand-mix recipes — say a Chanel glitter-infused blush with another brand of shadow. “Celebrity makeup artists would come in and buy 15 things. Then I’d take them home, melt them in the microwave, then give my new creations back the next day.”
When the two decided to create a line, they found a lab in the white pages. “We told them we worked for Estée Lauder, which wasn’t exactly a lie, so of course they brought us in,” recalls Johnson. “We parked our Tercel down the street.”

It’s extensive, and I often switch things out depending on how my skin is behaving, but there are a few things I’ll never be without: Neo Cutis’ Bio Serum, Eighth Day’s Face Serum, BeautyStat’s C Serum, La Prairie’s Caviar Eye Lift, and a secret new product I’ve created that will launch later this year.
What is the biggest beauty lesson you’ve learned?
Stick with what works and edit out all the noise. Too much is not a good thing.
What person or brand would you love to collaborate with?
A fragrance or candle with Snif could be cool. I can envision a collab with soda brand Poppi to make flavours of our Polite Pouts. I would love a Polite Periwinkle luggage with BÉIS because we’re taking over the world!
What&#;s not getting the attention it deserves in the beauty industry right now?
I’d say eyeshadow for sure. What happened to the love for eyeshadow?! It seems everyone is just sweeping one subtle shade over their lids, if anything, these days. I miss the creativity and textures of shadows. Baby, let’s bring back the glitter days of yore.
