De son vrai nom Demetrios, cet artiste américain d'origine grecque est une véritable légende, considéré par ses pairs comme LE précurseur du graffiti newyorkais.
En , Demetrios a 15 ans et vit à Washington Heights, au nord de Harlem. Il passe son été à trainer dans la rue entouré de ses amis Phil et Greg. Ensemble, ils apprennent qu'un gamin qui vit un peu plus haut à Inwood a pris pour habitude d'écrire un peu partout près de chez lui son nom et le numéro de sa rue : JULIO S'inspirant de cette démarche, ils choisissent chacun un pseudonyme : pour Démétrios ce sera Taki (diminutif courant de nombreux patronymes grecs).
L'année suivante, Demetrios intègre un lycée de Midtown Manhattan, qu'il rejoint chaque jour en train. Sur sa route, il dépose sa signature au marqueur indélébile : TAKI , à divers endroits dans les stations de metro, sur les affiches, les panneaux, les poteaux électriques et autres lampadaires

In , The New York Times reported on an anonymous graffiti tagger called “Taki ” whose magic marker markings were appearing all over the city and were prompting an outbreak of similar graffiti tags all over Manhattan.
At that point in time, graffiti in NYC wasn’t new, but there was something about the prevalence of Taki’s tags, and the attention TheNew York Times article brought to them, that spurned a kind of mythology around the anonymous “artist&#;.
Questions arose:
Who was Taki ?
Why were they doing this?
And what, if anything, was their message?
Initially, the answers to these questions were underwhelming.
Tracking down the artist, who turned out to be a bored 17 year old from Washington Heights named Demetrios, the NY Times questioned him about his motives.
To his credit, the teenager dismantled any fantastical notions about his work by stating there was no lofty message and even less reason behind what he did:
“You don’t do it for girls… You do it for yourself. You don&#;t go after it to be elected President.”

Taki とは、当時ニューヨークに住んでいたギリシャ系の子供、ディミトリウス君のニックネーム。年の夏、暇で時間を持て余していたディミトリウス君は、ある日、友人のフィル君から「２０ブロック先に住んでる奴が『Julio』って落書きしまくってるんだぜ」という話を聞きます。それを単純に「クール！」と思ったディミトリウス君は友達と一緒に落書き（タギング）を開始！当時、マンハッタン北のワシントン・ハイツ丁目に住んでいたので、『自分の名前＋自分住んでる番地』で構成された「TAKI 」というタグをあっちこっちに描きまくったのでした！バイト中にもタギングする熱心なライターでしたとさ！その後に「Style Wars」のようなライター VS NY市のグラフィティ戦争が勃発しますが、Taki といったパイオニアが居なければ、バンクシーや多種多様なグラフィティ・アートも生まれていなかったかもしれません。

ということで、数週間前のお話ですが、Roger GastmanさんとCaleb Neelonさんによる最新著書『The History Of American Graffiti』（アメリカン・グラフィティの歴史）という本が出版され、Taki やSnake 1, SJK , Mike and Rocky といった伝説のライター達によるサイン会＆写真の展示会がニューヨークで行われた際のレポートが12ozProphetに載っていました。当時子供だったライター達が、今どんな大人になっているのかな〜と気になりつつ、サイン会の様子をどうぞ！
