Peter Humphries Clark fell by the wayside of history. The acclaimed teacher had been the leading African-American voice in Cincinnati during the mids. Contemporaries considered Clark the equal to Frederick Douglass as an intellectual and politician, but Clark’s shifting politics cost him the support of the city’s black community and, ultimately, his legacy.

Only recently has Clark’s place in black history been reexamined. “Clark deserves a seat at the table with the giants,” wrote Nikki M. Taylor in “America’s First Black Socialist: The Radical Life of Peter H. Clark,” the first in-depth biography of Clark.

Journalist Wendell P. Dabney, in his book “Cincinnati’s Colored Citizens,” called Clark “Cincinnati’s greatest colored product from the standpoints of intellectuality, courage and racial loyalty.”

Clark was born in Cincinnati in , the son of a former slave, and grew up amidst racial tension and violence in the city’s First Ward around Sixth and Broadway streets.
