イサム・ノグチと岐阜提灯

イサム・ノグチと岐阜提灯の出会いは、年6月、平和記念公園に二つの橋を作るため広島へと向かう途中、長良川の鵜飼を見物する為に岐阜へ立ち寄ったことからはじまります。そこでノグチは岐阜提灯に関心を寄せ、尾関次七商店(現オゼキ)の提灯工場を見学する。提灯の制作工程や材料を理解したノグチは、その単純さと柔軟さに「ルナー彫刻」の新たな展開の可能性を予感し、さっそく次の日の晩には二つの新しい提灯のデザインを行った。その年の8月、アメリカに一時帰国していたノグチのもとに岐阜から4点の試作品が届けられる。その出来栄えに満足したノグチは、その年の10月にも岐阜へ行き提灯の試作を行った。楕円形や円筒形、卵を半分に切ったような形など、15種類ほどの変形提灯を制作した。同時にスタンドや金具の構造などにも工夫を重ね、そして、小さく折りたたんでコンパクトに収納できるという、提灯本来の特徴を持った、ワイヤースタンドによる組み立て式の小さい「あかり」を完成させた。ノグチはそれをうれしそうに封筒に入れて、畏友バックミンスター・フラーに送ったという。

岐阜で制作した新しい変形提灯を、ノグチは<AKARI>と名づけた。

それ以来、ノグチはしばしば岐阜を訪れ新作の<AKARI>に取り組み続け、展覧会が開催されるたびに、新しい形や大きさのモデルを発表していくこととなる。イサム・ノグチは、35年という長い時間をかけて、種類以上もの<AKARI>を生み出した。
<AKARI>を提灯ではなく光の彫刻だと考えたイサム・ノグチ。彼の彫刻作品には、「役立つ」という「用」を備えた芸術であり、60年を経た現在に至ってなお、たくさんの人々の生活を明るく照らしている。

In Isamu Noguchi began to design the Akari Light Sculptures, works characterised by weightless luminosity. He chose the name 'akari' for these objects, a word that means 'light' in Japanese, connoting both illumination and physical lightness. During a journey to Japan, Noguchi paid a visit to Gifu, a town known for its manufacture of paper parasols and lanterns. While there he sketched his first two Akari Light Sculptures, and over the following years he created a total of more than models, consisting of table, floor and ceiling lamps ranging in size from 24 to cm.

Dr. Ikuko Inoguchi is an internationally acclaimed concert pianist, performer-scholar, musicologist and teacher. Born in Japan she has also studied in the US and the UK. Ikuko is particularly interested in exploring repertoire which displays cross-cultural influences. A recital she gave in Germany was praised as “Ikuko Inoguchi —a brilliant pianist, whose playing demonstrates subtle sonority and fascinating colourful tones” (Der Kessener).

As a prize-winning pianist, Ikuko has performed as a soloist and chamber musician in concert series and festivals across Europe, the US, and Asia and at prestigious venues, such as St Martin-in-the-Fields in London, Aichi Art Theatre in Japan, Takemitsu-Kurosawa Festival in Würzburg, and 1st International Music Festival “Doctors in Performance” in Helsinki. In she made her London concerto debut, performing Anton Rubinstein’s Piano Concerto No. 4 with the City University Symphony Orchestra.
