A Brief History of Braille
By Vangelis Nikias
For many blind persons all over the world, Braille is the equivalent of the Gutenberg press. For some time, educators, parents and other allies have also developed a strong appreciation for the benefits the braille system of reading and writing brings to the blind and society more broadly.
We have Louis Braille to thank for this gift--the gift of literacy. When I think of literacy of the blind, I always remember a story shared by a blind man. The man was attempting to immigrate to Canada from an English-speaking country many decades ago. He held a university degree, however, being totally blind, he could not read printed letters. The immigration official who interviewed him told him he had to be classified as illiterate.
Louis Braille
On January 4th, we celebrated Louis Braille’s birthday. He was born in a small village outside Paris and lost his sight after fooling around with an awl in his father’s workshop. His parents worked as harness makers. Although young Louis accidentally injured only one of his eyes with the sharp needle, both eyes became infected resulting in complete blindness by the age of five.

Louis Braille Biography
Born on 4 January , Louis Braille was from a small town called Coupvray, which is about twenty miles to the East of Paris, France. He was the youngest of four children born to Simon-René, who was a leatherer and maker of horse tack and Monique Braille. His two older sisters were Monique Catherine and Marie Céline and his brother was called Louis-Simon.
The young Louis was always interested in his fathers work and from the time when he could first walk, he could be found in his fathers workshop. One day when he was only three years old, Louis was playing with an awl and was trying to make a hole in a piece of leather, when the tool slipped and struck him in the eye. A local physician did the best he could with the boys injury and then arranged for him to see a specialist in Paris the next day. However, the surgeon could do nothing else to help and due to a severe infection which eventually spread to the other eye, by the age of five, Louis Braille was completely blind.

Part 1: The Story of Louis Braille
In , in the small village of Coupvray, France, 3-year-old Louis Braille played in his fathers harness shop next to the familys house. His father was one of the best harness makers in the area. Mr. Braille also made reins, saddles and collars for the villagers horses. He cut strips of leather and punched holes in the leather with sharp tools. Louis had been warned that he was too young to play with the tools in the shop.
That day, Mr. Braille stepped outside the shop to help a customer. Louis thought he would try to punch a hole in a piece of leather just like his father did. He grabbed the tool and tried to push it through the leather. He didnt have the strength of his father. He tried again, pushing harder. The tool slipped from his hand and flew up and into his left eye. Louis screamed with pain. His parents, two sisters and brother ran to help him.
They put a cloth over his eye. There was no hospital in Coupvray. The closest doctor was
