Gregorio Hilario del Pilar

was a prominent figure in the Philippine Revolutionary Army – the official armed forces of the First Philippine Republic – during the Philippine-American War. He was also the nephew of Marcelo H. del Pilar, a noted writer, lawyer, and propagandist.

He may be one of the youngest generals in the army but his daring attacks in several encounters got him promoted in the rank. Because of his youth, del Pilar earned the moniker “Boy General.”

Because of his youth, he became known as the "Boy General". in during the Philippine-American War. But it was also during the war where del Pilar met his tragic fate – his last action in the Battle of Tirad Pass, where he was killed. He was only 24 years old.

Gregorio del Pilar is remembered as the "Hero of Tirad Pass". In this historic place, the young general fought and held back the strong invading Americans with only a handful of men, thus giving Aguinaldo ample time to escape the conquerors. It was a one-sided battle, but Gregorio del Pilar fought bravely. And he paid for this heroism with his life. He was shot and killed on that fateful day—December 2, , commanding Aguinaldo's rear guard.

Before he died, he wrote, "I am surrounded by fearful odds that will overcome me and my gallant men, but I am pleased to die fighting for my beloved country". The American victors looted the corpse of the fallen general. They got his pistol, diary and personal papers, boots and silver spurs, coat and pants, a lady's handkerchief with the name "Dolores Jose" (his sweetheart), diamond rings, gold watch, shoulder straps, and a gold locket containing a woman's hair.

He was a general in the Philippine Revolution and Philippine-American war and was nick named boy General due to his youthful age. Gregorio was the youngest general to die during the wars.

Gregorio was the son to H. del Pilar and Felipa Sempio of Bulacan and nephew to Marcelo H. del Pilar a propagandist and Torbio H. del Pilar who exiled from Guam due to Cavite Mutiny involvement. Gregorio was also known as Goyo and he joined the insurgency when war broke out between the Philippine Revolution against the Spanish rule under Andres Bonifacio.

He enrolled at the Ateneo de Manila and lived with his uncle, Deodato Arellano. At the age of 20 years, he graduated from Ateneo de Manila University in where he received his Bachelors degree but the Revolution broke out thus he stopped studying. He and other young Bulakenos presented themselves for military service.

Gregorio del Pilar was born on November 14, to Fernando H. del Pilar and Felipa Sempio of Bulacan, Bulacan. He was also the nephew of propagandist Marcelo H. del Pilar and Guam exile Toribio H. del Pilar.

del Pilar studied at the Ateneo de Manila University, and received his Bachelor of Arts degree in , at the age of del Pillar joined the insurgency when the Philippine Revolution against Spanish rule broke out in August under the leadership of Andres Bonifacio.
