Is ”a gift from God for our times”, great mystic, mistress of spiritual life, prophet, who reminded the biblical truth about merciful love of God for every human being and calls to proclaim it to the world through the testimony of life, deed, word and prayer.
Apostle of Divine Mercy, Prophet of Our Times, Great Mystic, Mistress of Spiritual Life – these are the epithets usually appended to the name of Sister Faustyna Kowalska, St. Faustyna (Faustina), of the Congregation of the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy. Sister Faustina is one of the Church’s most popular and widely known saints and the greatest mystics in the history of the Church.
Sister Faustina was born on 25 August in Głogowiec, Poland to Marianna and Stanisław Kowalski as the third of ten children. Two days later she was baptized with the name Helena in the parish church of Świnice Warckie. At the age of nine, she made her first Holy Communion. She attended elementary school for merely three years and then she went to work as a housekeeper in various well–to–do families in Aleksandrów and Łódź. From the age of seven, she had felt the calling for religious vocation, but her parents would not give her permission to e
Today is the feast of St. Maria Faustina Kowalska ( - ), a Polish nun who was chosen by Jesus to remind the world of the mystery of God's merciful love, the devotion to Divine Mercy.
Helena Kowalska was born in a small village in west-central Poland, the third of 10 children. She worked as a housekeeper in three cities before joining the Congregation of the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy in During her 13 years in various houses, she was employed as a cook, gardener, and porter.
In the 's, Sister Faustina grew in holiness and developed a mystical interior life. During her time at the convent, Sister Faustina was blessed with many spiritual gifts, including: visions, prophecy, the stigmata, bi-location, the ability to read human hearts, and mystical marriage.
Sister Faustina received from the Lord a message of mercy that she was told to spread throughout the world. She was asked to become the apostle and secretary of God's mercy, a model of how to be merciful to others, and an instrument for reemphasizing God's plan of mercy for the world. Jesus appeared to her and asked that a picture be painted of him with the inscription: Jesus, I Trust in You. &nbs

Faustina Kowalska was born on 25 August and was christened Helena. She was the third of ten children born to Marianna and Stanisław Kowalski, farmers from the village of Głogowiec in the parish of Świnice Warckie, Poland. Faustina had less than three years’ schooling. At the age of 16 she went into service with wealthy families in Aleksandrów Łódzki and in Lódź, to earn a livelihood for herself and to help her parents. Following her vision of the suffering Jesus and then one year of service in Ostrówek, Klembów, 20 miles north-east of Warsaw, 1 August saw her entering the Congregation of the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy, where during the ceremony of taking the veil she was given the name Sister Mary Faustina. During the thirteen years of her religious life she lived in many houses of the Congregation, but spent her longest periods in Kraków, Vilnius, Płock and Warsaw, serving chiefly as cook, gardener or portress. She suffered from tuberculosis of the lungs and of the digestive tract. For this reason, Faustina had two lengthy periods of treatment in Prądnik Hospital in Kraków.

St. Faustina Kowalska was born in Poland in She entered the convent of the Congregation of the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy at age She seemed to those around her to be a very ordinary nun as she worked in the kitchens and gardens. However, in , she was blessed by a vision of Jesus. She wrote in her diary:
In the evening, when I was in my cell, I became aware of the Lord Jesus clothed in a white garment. One hand was raised in blessing, the other was touching the garment at the breast. From the opening of the garment at the breast there came forth two large rays, one red and the other pale. In silence I gazed intently at the Lord; my soul was overwhelmed with fear, but also with great joy. After a while Jesus said to me, “Paint an image according to the pattern you see, with the inscription: Jesus, I trust in You.”
Before her death at age 33, she had other visions of Jesus, all of which centered on the message of God’s great mercy for humanity. Pope St. John Paul II had a particular devotion to St. Faustina and established Divine Mercy Sunday, which is celebrated each year on the Sunday one week after Easter Sunday.
