Born on 21 October in Chelyabinsk, a city in the Ural Mountains near the border with Siberia, Lera Auerbach is considered one of the most exciting new voices among today’s composers. Her music communes extraordinary power and intensity and explores a wide range of forms and genres. Communicating brooding intensity and poetic expression, her works are characterized by a stylistic freedom that juxtaposes tonal and atonal musical language. In addition, she is also a prolific writer of three volumes of poetry and prose and an exhibiting painter and sculptor. She has rightfully been called “a renaissance artist for modern times… as all of her work is interconnected as part of a cohesive and comprehensive artistic worldview.”

Auerbach was born into a close-knit Jewish community in Chelyabinsk, a city that is commonly referred to as an industrial city. However, it was a secret city where the atomic weapons of the USSR were manufactured. As Auerbach remembers, “In my city were the laboratories where the experiments were carried out by the military.

Lera Auerbach was born in the Urals in and has lived in the United States since She wrote her first opera at the age of 12, and has since composed over works. She does not limit herself to music, but is also creative as a poet and visual artist. Often, extra-musical inspirations serve as triggers for a composition.
The Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra, together with the Prague Philharmonic Choir, will perform her Symphony No. 6, "Vessels of Light," commissioned by Yad Vashem, the International Holocaust Memorial in Jerusalem and the American Society for Yad Vashem (NOV 11). Also featured is her cello concerto "Diary of a Madman" with Gautier Capuçon, who also premiered it with the Munich Philharmonic in (MAY 11). The Collenbusch Quartet performs their String Quartet No. 3 "Cetera Desunt" (APR 7), and the Dresden Philharmonic Children's Choir joins the Raschèr Saxophone Quartet to perform their "Galgenlieder" after Christian Morgenstern (JUN 16).
