Huey long assassination theories

State Capitol tour guides shepherd visitors through the corridor where Louisiana Sen. Huey Long was fatally shot, pausing to point out a bullet hole in the cold marble column to mark the spot where the Kingfish met his end 75 years ago Wednesday.

But like much that once was etched in stone about Long's death, the indentation is less than it appears. State Police investigators say it is a mundane imperfection in the marble, not a relic of the infamous shooting on Sept. 8,

Other flaws in the story have emerged through the years, raising questions that challenge -- but do not refute -- the official version of the shooting: that a young doctor named Carl Weiss, possibly angered by Long's political and personal attacks on his in-laws, put a bullet through Long, who died 31 hours later. Weiss was killed immediately by Long's bodyguards.

"I don't believe that he fired a fatal shot or indeed that he carried a gun into the state Capitol that night," Carl Weiss Jr. said of his father during a Baton Rouge symposium recently. "I don't think my father was a bad apple."

After the shooting, the biggest public controversy was whether Weiss was part of an assassination plot with Long'

Who killed Huey Long? Was it an assassination? A fisticuffs turned fatal? A police cover-up?

senator, whose homicide is still debated by historians and sleuths weighing confusing and sometimes contradictory evidence in the case.

The school history books say he was shot by Carl Weiss, a young Baton Rouge doctor who was killed immediately by Long's bodyguards. To this day, members of the Long family defend that explanation while relatives of Weiss believe he was framed.

The official metal plaque marking the fateful spot in the state Capitol is careful not to take sides. It says only that Long "died September 10, , from a bullet wound inflicted here on September 8, He was 42 years old."

On that, everyone agrees. The rest of the story has accumulated clouds of doubt for three quarters of a century and seems destined to remain without clear resolution.

"The only premise that I personally believe in, is that no matter what theory that you believe in personally, there exists serious and believable evidence that disputes your theory, as well as all the other theories," sai

A seemingly typical Sunday evening in Louisiana, September 8, , was about to become extraordinary. The House of Representatives had organized a special session to pass a set of bills. A prominent member present in the State Capitol that evening was the year old Senator, Huey Long. Elected Louisiana governor at the age of 35, the youngest in history, Long’s autobiography best summarized his political agenda: “Every Man a King.” He abolished the state’s poll tax, distributed free textbooks to students and pushed for tax on petroleum products to help fund social programs. Not surprisingly, his efforts at wealth redistribution did not sit well with many. One such person was a district judge Benjamin Pavy.

That Sunday evening, Pavy’s fate was to be voted upon in Baton Rouge. Long had introduced “House Bill Number One” in the Capitol to intentionally re-draw Louisiana’s districts and gerrymander his political opponent Pavy from the bench. Pavy’s son-in-law, a physician named Carl Weiss, was present in Baton Rouge that day to speak with Long and prevent Pavy’s ousting.

Shortly after pm that night, the House voted to pass the Bill, removing Pavy from office.
