Sir Christopher Alan Bayly, FBA, FRSL (18 May – 18 April ) was a British historian specialising in British Imperial, Indian and global history.[1][2] From to , he was Vere Harmsworth Professor of Imperial and Naval History at the University of Cambridge.
Biography
Bayly was from Tunbridge Wells, England, where he attended The Skinners School. He studied at Balliol College, Oxford and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree. He then remained at the University of Oxford and undertook post-graduate study at St Antony's College, Oxford.[3] He completed his Doctor of Philosophy (DPhil) degree in with a thesis titled The development of political organisation in the Allahabad locality, –[4] under John Andrew Gallagher.
Bayly was the Vere Harmsworth Professor of Imperial and Naval History at the University of Cambridge from to He was also a trustee of the British Museum. In , he succeeded Sir John Baker as President of St Catharine's College, Cambridge. Bayly also became the Director of Cambridge's Centre of South Asian Studies. Sir Christopher Alan Bayly, FBA, FRSL is a British historian specializing in British Imperial, Indian, and global history.
Having obtained his BA, MA, and DPhildegrees from the University of Oxford, the latterunder the supervision of John Andrew Gallagher, he is currently the Vere HarmsworthProfessor of Imperial and NavalHistory at the University of Cambridge and a trustee of the British Museum.
In , he was elected a Fellow of the BritishAcademy and in was awarded the WolfsonHistoryOeuvrePrize for his many contributions to the discipline. He was knighted in the Queen's BirthdayHonours List of for his services to History. Upon beinginformed of the knighthood, he stated: "I regard this not only as a greatpersonalhonour but, as an historian of India, as recognition of the growingimportance of the history of the non-western world."
In , he succeeded Professor Sir John Baker as President of St Catharine's College, Cambridge. More recently, Bayly also became the Director of Cambridge's Centre of South Asian Studies. He is co-editor of The New Cambridge History of India and sits on the editorial board of various academic journals.

In , he received the Wolfson prize for history for his entire body of work. In , he was the first scholar to be knighted "for services to history outside of Europe."
