Influenced by contemporary romantic sentiments for preaching to the heathen, Judson joined other youthful seminarians in forming the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions (). In the board dispatched him to seek joint missionary action with the London Missionary Society. Adoniram Judson was born on the 9th August , the son of a stern and humourless Congregationalist minister, in Malden, Massachusetts, USA.(1) He showed early in his life that he was a brilliant child.(2) However, during his time at what is know known as Brown's College(3) he was greatly influenced by the Deistic beliefs of a close friend called Jacob Eames.(4) On his return home he announced to his shocked parents his rejection of Christianity and left for New York to take up a career as a playwright.(5) This turned out to be a mistake, and sickened and disappointed he found himself alone at an inn. There was only one room left on that rainy night, and that was next door to a dying man.(6) After a fitful night he was brought to his senses by the reality of death and returned home to his parents,(7) but they were still unable to help him or to answer his intellectual reservations(8). Adoniram Judson, First Missionary from the United States

I (Adoniram Judson) sat by the fireplace after supper, poking a long stick into the crackling fire. Mother was clearing the table and little Mary cooed sweetly in her cradle--a wonderful sound to my ears after hearing her cry and cough so many nights lately.

Father lit his pipe. "I hear they call you Virgil at school now."

"Yes, Father. They all say I do the lessons too fast!"

"If you train your mind, son, you will become a great man one day," Father replied from the nearby rocker. "I'm going to enroll you in Captain Morton's School of Navigation. What do you think of that?"

I could have shouted! Father kept his word and enrolled me in the navigation school, a short distance from my home near Plymouth, Massachusetts. I learned how to chart the sun and stars and read marine maps. I dreamed of sailing to far away places some day.

Turning Away from God

On the evening of September 13, , a knock came to my (Adoniram Judson's) bedroom door. It was Father.

"It's Mary," he said. His face was pale as though he'd taken sick. "She's dead."

I felt as though Father had hit me in the stomach. Immediately I thought of Fathe

CHILDHOOD AND EDUCATION

Adoniram Judson, a Baptist missionary, was the first Caucasian Protestant missionary to devote himself to Christianizing Burma. Adoniram Judson, Jr. was born on August 9, , in Malden, Middlesex County, Massachusetts. His father Adoniram Judson, Sr. was a Congregational minister. His mother Abigail (Brown) Judson took care of his studies and taught him to read at a young age. He was sharp, meritorious and brilliant in his studies since his childhood days. He attended the College of Rhode Island & Providence Plantations (now Brown University) and graduated as valedictorian of his class at the age of nineteen.

During his graduation days, Adoniram Judson met Jacob Eames, a skeptic, and persuasive unbeliever. The association and bonding with Eames led him to abandon his childhood faith and the religious instructions he had received from his parents. Unfortunately, Eames died after suffering a violent illness in a room next to Judson’s in an inn. The sudden death of his friend shook Judson. Consequently, he returned to his childhood faith and became a believer again.
