Rostow, Walter Whitman (“Walt”)
(b. 7 October in New York City; d. 13 February in Austin, Texas), economic historian, deputy assistant for national security affairs under President John F. Kennedy, chairman of the Policy Planning Council at the State Department, and President Lyndon B. Johnson’s special assistant for national-security affairs.
Rostow’s parents, Lillian (Hellman) Rostowsky and Victor Rostowsky, were married in and had three sons. His father was a Jewish emigrant from Russia who settled in the United States in , and, like many immigrants, he Americanized his surname upon his arrival at Ellis Island. (His mother was not the famous playwright.) A metallurgist, Victor Rostow found work in New Haven, Connecticut, where the public school, Hillhouse High School, offered its eight top students a scholarship to attend Yale University. Rostow thus secured scholarships to attend America’s third-oldest university.

Early Life and EducationWalt Whitman Rostow was born on October 7, , in New York City, to Russian Jewish immigrants Victor and Lillian Rostow. His parents were active supporters of socialism and named their three sons after union leaders, philosophers, and poets who shared their socialist ideals. Career and Contributions
During the crisis surrounding the abdication of Edward VIII in , Rostow assisted journalist Alistair Cooke in covering the events for the NBC radio network. Born in New York City on October 7, , Walt Whitman Rostow was the son of Russian immigrants Victor Aaron and Lillian (Helman) Rostow. He attended Yale University, receiving a B.A. in Following graduation, Rostow continued his studies, first as a Rhodes scholar at Baillol College, Oxford University, , and then as a graduate student at Yale University, After receiving a Ph.D. in economics from Yale University in , Rostow taught for one year as an instructor in economics at Columbia University.
With the outbreak of World War II Rostow joined the Office of Strategic Services, soon achieving the rank of major. Stationed in London, one of his primary responsibilities was to recommend enemy targets to the U.S. Air Forces. For his additional work with the British Air Ministry in he was awarded the Legion of Merit and was made an honorary member of the Order of the British Empire.
Following the war he entered the Department of State as assistant chief of the German-Austrian Economic Division. In Rostow was named the Harmsworth Professor of American History at Oxford University. A
