岡上淑子（年生まれ。高知出身のシュルレアリスム系コラージュ作家。現在（年）93歳、高知在住。
学生時代に瀧口修造に見出され、コラージュアーティストとしてデビューして、おもに年代に美術活動を行う。60年代以後は、姿を見せなくなるが、年頃から再評価されはじめる。
初の大規模な回顧展「岡上淑子コラージュ展--はるかなる旅」が年、高知県立美術館で催される。 また、東京都庭園美術館で年3月から4月にわたり、個展「フォトコラージュ—岡上淑子 沈黙の奇蹟」を開催。
海外でも注目高まり、年にメトロポリタン美術館の「国境を越えるシュルレアリスム」展に古賀春江、岡本太郎と並んで日本のシュルレアリスム作家として参加、紹介される。
現在、岡上淑子の作品は、国内外でコレクションされており、国内では高知県立美術館、東京国立近代美術館、東京都写真美術館、栃木県立美術館の国公立美術館に、海外では米国のヒューストン美術館、ニューヨーク近代美術館、そしてギャラリーや個人コレクションとして所蔵されている。
岡上淑子は、年1月、高知県高知市一宮で、農林省に努める厳格な父親と専業主婦のおとなしく優しい母親とのあいだに生まれた。
未熟児として生まれたので、父親の実家である高知で3歳まで過ごし、その後、上京して代々木上原で過ごす。弟が1人いるが、生まれてすぐ亡くなった。
小学校に入る前に下北沢へ引っ越す。多趣味の父親の影響で、映画、カメラ、スポーツなど小さなころからさまざまな文化に触れて育つようになる。小学校のときに小さなカメラを買ってもらい、撮影し始めたのが写真の始まり。
美術との出会いは、小学4年か5年のときに、岡上をモデルにした作品を出品した図画の先生の展覧会を見るために上野にいった事だという。
小学校卒業後、クリスチャン系の東洋英和女学院に入学。女学校時代はそのまま本格的な空襲が始まった戦争時代と重なり、4年のときに勤労動員のため蒲田へ移動。ハンダ付けやニクロム線を巻いたり、製図を手伝うなど、電気製品を作る工場で働くことになる。
作業中に警戒警報が出たら防空壕に入るという、学生生活だった。4年のときに保母になる資格をとるために内部進学受験するが失敗し、学校を卒業する。
卒業した20年に、渋谷や蒲田などの下町への大空襲が始まり、岡上は7月へ高知へ疎開することになる。8月に終戦となり、9月に東京へ戻る。
戦後、恵泉学園の家事科に入学。家事科へ進んだのは勉強したくなかったため。そこで武満浅香（旧姓・若山浅香）と同じクラスになる。この友人は、芸術家集団「実験工房」のメンバーだった作曲家の武満徹の妻であり、岡上を武満徹から瀧口修造へと橋渡しする人物である。

The Tokyo Metropolitan Teien Art Museum is currently hosting the largest exhibition ever of the surreal photo collages of Toshiko Okanoue. Now 91, Okanoue burst onto the art scene in the s when her work came to the attention of Shuzo Takiguchi, a leading figure in Japan’s Surrealism movement. Using images cut from imported magazines including Vogue and LIFE, she explored themes of war, femininity and relations between the sexes.

Born in , in Kochi, Japan, Toshiko Okanoue grew up in Tokyo. She began to make photo collages while she was studying fashion design and drawing in Bunka Gakuin in the early s. When she first began working, she had very little art historical knowledge, and knew nothing of the Surrealist movement.
In post-war Japan, a shortage of goods and materials meant the country was flooded with commodities from foreign countries. Okanoue used fragments from Western fashion magazines such as Life, Harper’s Bazaar and Vogue, to create radical compositions combining body parts, animals and inanimate objects in dynamic arrangements. Although the component parts of her collages originated from Western sources, Okanoue herself regarded her technique of image making as deeply rooted in Japanese tradition. She thought of her works as a form of hari-e (‘hari’ meaning pasting and ‘e’ meaning a picture in Japanese), a traditional Japanese technique of making pictures by pasting small pieces of coloured paper onto pasteboard.
