Conquering Summits with Lebanese Explorer Maxime Chaya
Seven Summits, Three Poles, one Ocean and one Desert: Lebanese explorer Maxime Chaya has achieved what the majority can only ever dream of. In May , he became the first Lebanese to climb Mount Everest, completing the Seven Summits. He then skied to the North and South Pole, thereby achieving the Explorers’ Grand Slam; an elite group of people to accomplish such an incredible feat. In this exclusive interview, he shares his journey from finance to the world&#;s highest peaks, his relationship with Lebanon and what motivates him.
I was born and raised in Lebanon. I&#;m someone who was always fond of sports, especially competitive sports. However, at the age when I was meant to compete, my country was at war. So, I was never able to express myself through sports as much as I would have wanted to. This burning passion stayed with me.
Then one day, after winning an international bike race in Kenya, Africa, I was invited to climb a nearby mountain: Kilimanjaro. I accepted the challenge, and that was a real turning point. Indeed, after climbing the 5, meters of Kilimanjaro, which was my first big summit, I discovered a new

Lebanon’s foremost sportsman and adventurer, Maxime Chaya was the first person from his country to hoist its flag atop Everest (). Besides achieving the Seven Summits -the highest mountain on every continent- Max also skied to the South Pole () and North Pole (), unassisted and all the way from the coast.
Max then took to the high seas and, together with his two crew-mates, he rowed across the Indian Ocean (), earning a Guinness World speed record. Then, Maxime fell in love with the desert and together with his ultra-endurance teammate, went on to complete the first unassisted crossing of a sand desert on a bicycle: the Empty Quarter (). Besides conferences to multinationals, Maxime gives of himself generously to the underprivileged and the youth of the region. He is in a perpetual state of adventure and discovery, currently as active as ever, preparing for yet another daunting expedition.

Maxime Edgard Chaya was born and raised in Beirut until the year when the civil war saw him and his family take refuge abroad. He pursued his education overseas in Greece, France, Canada and the United Kingdom, graduating with a Bachelor of Science Honors degree from the London School of Economics (LSE).
Chaya then spent a year as a trainee at Republic National Bank of New York's head office on Fifth Avenue before foregoing post-graduate studies and returning home to take over the family's foreign exchange business.
