Lucius Licinius Lucullus
Lucius Licinius Lucullus known as Lucullus was born in BCE. He was a Roman commander and politician. Sullas supporter, famous for his victories in the war with the ruler of Pontus Mithridates VI Eupator.
Family origins
The House of Lucullus, like most of the aristocratic families of Rome, searched for its roots deep in the past. Some families, such as Julius, claimed that they were descended from gods. The Lucullus were somewhat more modest in their descent from a certain Lucullus, king of Illyria, who in the past had a novel of his subjects to Italy. There, the subjects of King Lucullus gave rise to the Pelign people who lived in the middle of the Apennine Peninsula.
Historically, the Lucullus descended from a much older and distinguished gens of the Licinius. Licinius probably had an Etruscan origin and descended from the plebeian class. The Etruscan origin may be proved by the fact that the word licinius probably derives from the Etruscan word lecne (curve, slant), which then passed into Latin. Licinius achieved great importance in the 5th and 4th centuries BCE when they had a great influence on the political life of Rome. However, in
Lucius Licinius Lucullus (born c. BC) was a politician and a general of the Roman Republic. He was the eldest son of Lucius Licinius Lucullus, the consul of BC. He, however, did not achieve the political success of his father and failed to hold the consulship, reaching only the position of praetor in BC. During his praetorship he first successfully put down the Vettian Revolt, a minor slave revolt in Campania, before being sent to take command in Sicily during the Second Servile War. He was later relieved of his command and prosecuted for embezzlement upon his recall to Rome. Being convicted, he was banished from the city and lived the remainder of his life in exile. He is the father of the more famous Lucius Licinius Lucullus, who defeated Mithridates and Tigranes in the Third Mithridatic War.

Lucius Licinius Lucullus - Encyclopedia
LUCIUS LICINIUS LUCULLUS (c. i io), surnamed Ponticus from his victories in Asia Minor over Mithradates VI. of Pontus. His father, of the same name, had held an important military command in Sicily, but on his return to Rome he was prosecuted on a charge of bribery and condemned to exile. His mother was Caecilia, of the family of the Metelli, and sister of Quintus Caecilius Metellus Numidicus. Early in life he attached himself to the party of Sulla, and to that party he remained constant. He attracted Sulla's notice in the Social War (90) and in 88, when Sulla was appointed to the command of the war against Mithradates, accompanied him as quaestor to Greece and Asia Minor. While Sulla was besieging Athens, Lucullus raised a fleet and drove Mithradates out of the Mediterranean. He won a brilliant victory off Tenedos, and had he been more of a patriot and less of a party man he might have ended a perilous war. In 84 peace was concluded with Mithradates. Sulla returned to Rome, while Lucullus remained in Asia, and by wise and generous financial reforms laid the foundation of the prosperity of the province. The result of his policy was
Lucullus: The Life and Campaigns of a Roman Conqueror
The military achievements of Lucius Licinius Lucullus (/56 B.C.) have been the subject of admiration and great respect throughout the history of the study of warfare. Yet there have been few studies dedicated to a comprehensive examination of exactly how Lucullus conquered the Roman East and made it a more or less cohesive part of the empire. Lee Frantantuono considers every aspect of Lucullus life, starting with the training and education of a future Roman officer, but the greatest emphasis is on his military strategy and tactics during the Third Mithridatic War and his military adventures in Armenia. His most famous achievement was his victory against immense odds at the land battle of Tigranocerta. We are also reminded that he one of the most formidable naval strategists of the Roman Republic. Lucullus complicated relationship with Sulla and Crassus is explored and the study concludes with the retirement of the man Pliny the Elder memorably referred to as 'Xerxes in a Toga', a patron of the arts and master of a life of horticulture and reflection.
