It wasn’t too long ago – around a year and a half – that they put together the initial idea that became Gold Class, with a clear focus resulting in a full-length album, soon after their first release: last year’s single ‘Michael’. “It was one of our first songs,” Evan states. “That was after three rehearsals. There was one rehearsal where it was long, dirge-y ten-minute jams, then after that we pieced together song ideas. After a few rehearsals, that was one of two or three songs we had. In terms of deciding to release it, we just thought it had a chorus.” “That was October last year,” Adam says. “We started playing in January, with our first show in April. We were sitting around, and Evan said he had some guitar ideas he’d been playing around with. I think I wrote some vocal stuff to those parts, then that was all scrapped by the time the four of us got together. We just started from scratch.” “That’s been the modus operandi: to put something together then deconstruct it completely, until there’s a song,” Evan adds. “It’s laborious, but it’s good. Tearing Off Your Shirt and Howling at the Gods with Gold Class
Despite playing in a musical tradition that uses rage as the status quo for fuel, Melbourne band Gold Class forgoes typical punk aggression. Since forming in they’ve risen quickly, opening Golden Plains to a massive crowd and headlining Paradise Festival that same year. Their new album Drum has an athletic energy. On lead single Twist in the Dark, Evan James Purdey’s guitar lines constrict and stretch out like an athletes cramp, while the drums and bass of Logan Gibson and Jon Shub have the pound and grip of a sprinter’s running spikes sinking into rubber. Singer Adam Curley’s baritone is the gasp of a competitive deep-sea diver coming up for air.
The weight of the rhythm section on their first record It’s You leaves you feeling caught in the tram tracks at times. On Drum you still feel hedged in by steel walls, but its weight propels you out of the groove rather than bearing down from above.

Gold Class - Life As A Gun
Armed with only a handful of songs, Gold Class quickly drew heads to their live shows when they appeared mid, just a couple of months after getting together. Characterised by attacking rhythms, bristling garage guitar lines and the deep vibrato of singer Adam Curley, the band were soon mixing art-space and basement gigs for their debut seven-inch, “Michael”. “Life as a Gun” and “Michael” will be included on Gold Class’ forthcoming debut album. Stay tuned for more details.
Gold Class formed quickly. Guitarist Evan James Purdey recruited fellow creative-writing students Mark Hewitt (drums) and Adam Curley (vocals) to elaborate on guitar ideas he’d recorded to a Dictaphone over the course of a summer. Jon Shub, who worked late-night bar shifts with Purdey and Curley and who builds and fixes guitars out of a workshop, made an instrument for himself and joined on bass. The initial philosophy was simple: each member would write his own parts with reverence given to the whole.
“We write everything together in a small room, which is a recipe for tantrums, but we also look out for each other’s interests and we’re pretty dedicated to that way of work
