Biography

Born in Cape Town in , Finuala was the seventh of eight children of radio broadcasters Eve van der Byl and Paddy Dowling. She studied at UCT and then, after obtaining her MA in English, moved to Pretoria, where she spent eight years teaching English at Unisa. She gave birth to a daughter, Beatrice, in , and while on sabbatical in the village of Riebeek-Kasteel, completed a doctorate (published in as Fay Weldon\'s Fiction). After her divorce she returned to her hometown of Kalk Bay, where she works as a freelance educational materials developer, writer and lecturer.
Starting with a few short stories published in local and international anthologies, she had her first taste of popular success with a series of comic skits entitled Cape Cool, performed regularly at a local vegetarian restaurant. Later this theatrical side had a more public presentation when her comedy Bungee Writing Finals won the Audience Vote at the PANSA Reading of New Writing Festival in , and went on to a full production at Spier, the historic wine estate and entertainment centre once owned by her seventeeth-century van der Byl forefathers.

Finuala Dowling (born June ) is a South African poet and writer.

Biography

The seventh of eight children born to radio broadcasters Eve van der Byl and Paddy Dowling, Finuala Dowling obtained an MA in English from the University of Cape Town (UCT), and a from the University of South Africa (UNISA), where she lectured in English for eight years.

Her first poetry anthology, I Flying, was published in and won the Ingrid Jonker Prize. She has also won the Sanlam Award for Poetry and the Olive Schreiner Prize. She won the M-Net Literary Award (English category) for Homemaking for the Down-at-Heart.

With Tessa and Cara Dowling she has set up an entertainment company, Dowling Sisters Productions.

Family

Dowling lives in Kalk Bay, Cape Town with her daughter Beatrice, who also writes poetry.

    Finuala Dowling was born in Cape Town, South Africa, in Her first volume of poetry, I Flying, won the Ingrid Jonker Prize and her second collection, Doo-Wop Girls of the Universe, was joint winner of the SANLAM award. Her third volume of poetry, Notes from the dementia ward won the Olive Schreiner Prize. She has appeared as a guest poet at the Aldeburgh festival and at Snape Maltings in the UK, and at all of South Africa’s major literary festivals. In May-June of she appeared with other South African poets at the Biennale Internationale des Poètes en Val-de-Marne in Paris.

    Finuala is the author of three novels, the most recent of which — Homemaking for the Down-at-Heart — won the MNet prize for fiction.

    Finuala has a Masters and doctorate in English literature. She writes textbooks, runs poetry workshops and occasionally gives lectures.
