Woman of the Century/Evaleen Stein
STEIN, Miss Evaleen, poet, was born in Lafayette, Ind., and has passed her whole life in that city. She received a liberal education and at an early age showed her poetic talents. Her father, the late John A. Stein, was a brilliant lawyer and a writer of meritorious verse and prose, and he directed her studies and reading so as to develop the talents which he discovered in her. EVALEEN STEIN. Her training included art, and she has won a reputation as an artist of exceptional merit. She has done much decorative work for Chicago and New York societies, and recently she took an art -course in the Chicago Art Institute. She began to publish poems in local papers about six years ago, and her work at once attracted attention by its finish and mastery of form, as well as by its spirit and sentiment. She has contributed prose sketches to the local press, and has been a contributor to "St. Nicholas," the Boston "Transcript," the Indianapolis "Journal" and other periodicals. Evaleen Stein was born on October 12, , in Lafayette, Indiana, to John and Virginia Stein. Her father was a successful lawyer and politician. He was a member of the Indiana Senate in and he introduced the bill of establishment of the Indiana Agricultural College (later to become Purdue University). All members of the Stein family were writers. Evaleen’s brother, Orth Stein, was one of the first well-known columnists in the local newspaper. Evaleen attended the Art Institute of Chicago where she learned decorative design and was recognized for her illuminated manuscripts. However, her interests soon turned primarily toward literature and in she published her first collection of poetry, One Way to the Woods. Five years after this, Stein published Among the Trees Again, her second book of poetry inspired by the Indiana countryside. Stein would create a few more works of poetry before changing interests once again, however this time to short stories. Known more for her poetry however, I focus primarily on this as it directly relates to Indiana.
One Way to the Woods is about all the aspects of Indiana landscape including the large sycamore trees, rows of cornfields,
marks the centenary of the death of Evaleen Stein. This online exhibit illuminates the literary contributions of an Indiana woman author whose fame, in the words of one commentator, "has not been commensurate with the quality of her output." The exhibit also highlights the work of lesser-known illustrators during the so-called "Golden Age" of children's book illustration.

Life
Evaleen Stein was born into an upper-class family in Lafayette, Indiana, in Her father John A. Stein () was a respected lawyer and author. Her mother Virginia () became a librarian at Lafayette Public Library after her husband's death and would later hire her daughter for part-time work in the library.
Evaleen trained as an artist and was known for her decorative work, particularly manuscript illumination. She began publishing nature poems in local newspapers in the late s. After the turn of the twentieth century, she specialized in writing fiction for children.

Biographical Information
Evaleen Stein was born in to John A. Stein and Virginia Tomlinson Stein in Lafayette, Indiana. Her brother was Orth Stein. The Stein family was well respected within the greater Lafayette community due to John Stein’s law practice, involvement in local and state politics, his role in the establishment of Purdue University, and his involvement with the Board of Trustees once the university was established. Virginia Stein was also well respected due to her position at the Lafayette library after the passing of her husband. Both Orth and Evaleen were known for their writing, although Orth’s writing was primarily journalistic in nature.
Ms. Stein’s writing career got its start with the publishing of several of her poems in Indianapolis newspapers. As she gained more attention for her work from better known local authors such as James Whitcomb Riley and George Ade, she was eventually able to begin publishing her poems in collected volumes.
