TX TX - Fred and Edwina Rogers, The Icebox Murders, Houston, 23 June

Fred and Edwina Rogers were murdered in their home in what is still officially an unsolved case dubbed "The Icebox Murders".

On June 23, , two Houston police officers forced their way into the Rogers&#; home after Edwina&#;s nephew Marvin became concerned about the couple when his phone calls to his aunt went unanswered for days. Upon entering the home, police found nothing unusual but noticed food sitting on the dining room table. One officer opened the refrigerator and found what appeared to be numerous cuts of washed, unwrapped meat neatly stacked on the shelves.

The officer later recalled that he thought the meat was that of a butchered hog. As the officer was closing the door, he noticed two human heads visible through the clear glass of the vegetable bin. The heads were those of Fred and Edwina Rogers. What the officer initially thought was unwrapped cuts of hog meat were the couple&#;s dismembered limbs and torsos. Police later discovered the couple&#;s organs in a nearby sewer (the organs had been removed, cut up and flushed down the toilet) while other remains were never found.

Everything We Know About The Unsolved Icebox Murders

Authors John R. Craig and Phillip A. Rogers continued to study the Rogers' murder after the disappearance of the only suspect. In , the two published the book "The Man on the Grassy Knoll," in which they claim that Charles Rogers was actually a CIA agent. What's more, the book claimed that he, along with Charles Harrelson, father of actor Woody Harrelson, were involved in the assassination of then-President John F. Kennedy in Dallas in This account further claims that Charles Rogers killed his parents because his mother was on to him, and that the alleged murderer fled to Guatemala after his crimes.

In a Publisher's Weekly review, the reviewer claims that Craig and Rogers' thesis, though compelling, is rather weak. "The degree of poetic license, in terms of reconstructed dialogue and attributed thought, seems excessive here, and sourcing is virtually nonexistent," the reviewer wrote.

However, writers Hugh Gardenier and his writing partner, his wife Martha, dismissed any connection to the JFK assassination in their own book ("The Icebox Murders"; ). They did admit, however, that Charles Rogers may have had CIA

Criminal: The Ice Box Murders

In this week's episode of Criminal, a murder mystery is solved by some surprising sleuths: a married pair of accountants.  Host Phoebe Judge spoke with Texas-based CPAs Hugh and Martha Gardinier about how an audit unraveled a complicated criminal case. Criminal is a podcast recorded at WUNC.

In the s, Fred and Edwina Rogers were found dead in their Houston home. Fred was in his 80s and Edwina in her 70s when the police found their bodies dissected and heads severed in the refrigerator. The first person the police went to was their son, Charles Rogers. Charles was thought of as a shut-in, however, he was nowhere to be found after the murder of his parents.

“[Charles] childhood was pretty grim by most acceptable standards," Martha Gardinier said. "It was a life of alcohol and physical abuse and emotional abuse. He basically became a loner, but he was a brilliant person.”

In their investigation, the Gardiniers found that Charles was actually a talented geophysicist, he'd gone treasure hunting in the Sierra Madres and had several business interests. The Gardiniers concluded Charles Rogers had been very good at covering his tracks after h

When it comes to unsolved cases, this is one of those stories that has so many theories around it that it's hard to tell what is exactly fact and what is fiction. I have a long list of cases that I will be covering in future posts and this story just happened to be on the list so this week I wanted to go for a case which left a lot of questions behind it.

You'll see as the story goes on, its quite obvious who the murderer was but the circumstances were not that simple so let's get into it

In an elderly couple by the name of Fred and Edwina Rogers were living with their son Charles, at a house he owned in an area called Montrose in Houston, Texas. Charles was unemployed and in his 40s and the relationship between himself and his parents had always been rocky. Fred and Edwina had been together for 50 years and they also had a daughter, Betty who had sadly passed away years before.

To anyone looking in, Fred and Edwina were just a quiet, ordinary couple but behind closed doors they were said to have abused Charles both physically and psychologically
