DEVENDRA RAJ ANKUR …. A natural visionary.
Summer workshops were in full swing at Nehru Centre, Worli and first ever attempt of NSD to have its extension in Mumbai. This was in when Devendra Raj Ankur…. We all know him as “ANKURJI” who was the Director of NSD then.
The hall was filled with many participants for this one year diploma of production oriented course by NSD in collaboration with Nehru Centre. The foyer was filled with buzz of youth with talks of Kalidas’s play… some one rehearsing the monologues from Aashad ka ek din.. and few trying to sing and some chitchatting . I was totally clueless and was there for the audition.
I went in hall and I was asked to sing .
I started with this romantic Marathi composition of Ashaji ….
“Chandanyaat firtana maza dharlaas haath”
the person on table was trying to give some taal ( I think he was making me betaal ) and one on harmonium some melody and I singing on entire different plane…. Believe me …It was a chaos.

Ankurji : Which is the last play you have seen ?
Me : I don’t remember but atleast for past 7 years , I have not seen a single play.

A story to tell
The former Director of the National School of Drama,a recipient of the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award,Ankur believes theatre has a structure and system. As an avid student of both literature and drama,he wanted to find a way to utilise his passions on stage. He came up with the idea of putting literary text stories,novels,autobiographies on stage,without dramatising them.

First one must decide whether the text is dramatic enough to perform,whether it is sensitive and creates an impact, says Ankur. The idea is to have a theatrical experience without a dramatic adaptation,be it through a sutradhaar or without one. There are no pre-decided ways,says Ankur,with which he and his actors work. Dialogues,movement and description are paramount for them. If the story is powerful,then we dont care much about sets or equipment. I dont rehearse and the first draft is done by my actors. We read many stories together,select two and dont touch the form,editing it only if the story is long, he says.
Ankur plans a Katha Collage with stories based on one theme or totally diverse ones. He has just finished work on two books Saatva Rang,

The establishment of Tagore National School of Drama took place in July , and its first session was inaugurated on October 7, , inthe presence of Devendra Raj Ankur, the former director of the National School of Drama and a pioneerof storytelling on the establishment of this drama academy was motivated by various objectives, such as fostering imagination and creativity among the youth, developing the process of artistic creation, and discovering talents in the remote regions for theatrical performances, and training and nurturing them professionally. With these multiple goals in mind, this drama academy was founded.
